The important role of women in strengthening the roots of democracy

Nabaz-e-Punjab, Chandigarh, March 10, 2026:
To mark International Women’s Day, special events were organised across all districts of Punjab to recognise and honour the dedication of women Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who play a crucial role in strengthening the electoral process at the grassroots level.
At the district level, the top three women BLOs from each Assembly Constituency were felicitated by the respective Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officers in recognition of their exemplary service and their contribution towards the revision and purification of the electoral roll. The events acknowledged the consistent efforts of women BLOs who work diligently with citizens and serve as the vital link between the Election Commission and voters.
Highlighting the vital role played by women in the country’s electoral process, Ms. Anindita Mitra, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, said, “Women Booth Level Officers represent a robust and dependable force within our electoral machinery. Their dedication, sincerity and strong connection with communities help strengthen the foundations of our democratic processes. To mark International Women’s Day, it is important to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution of these women who work tirelessly to support the conduct of free, fair and inclusive elections.”
She further noted that women BLOs have consistently demonstrated professionalism, sensitivity and commitment while interacting with citizens at the grassroots, thereby helping build greater public confidence in the electoral system.
The CEO, Punjab also highlighted several technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving voter services and accessibility. These include the “Book a Call” facility, which enables citizens to directly seek assistance regarding electoral services, and ECINet – a unified digital platform that integrates multiple election-related mobile applications into a single interface, making electoral services more accessible and user-friendly for citizens.
The felicitation ceremonies served as a tribute to the dedication and professionalism of women BLOs across the state, acknowledging their significant role in strengthening democratic participation and supporting a robust and responsive electoral ecosystem.
