Majithia says he will not bow before injustice, questions Punjab government on law and order and rising debt

Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, 7 March 2026:
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia took a swipe at the Punjab government over the timing of the state Budget, alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party is focused on PR optics, he said the Punjab government is presenting its Budget on Sunday as a PR opportunity for itself, and questioned the reasoning behind such a move. Majithia also referred Budget as Farce as earlier claims made by AAP leaders that Punjab would generate around Rs 20,000 crore annually from mining and save another Rs 30,000 crore by stopping corruption. Asking where the money from these projections had gone, he said the government must present a clear account of the funds. He further claimed that under the present government the state’s debt has crossed Rs 4 lakh crore.
Majithia said he will continue to speak against injustice despite facing legal cases, asserting that neither pressure nor intimidation would silence him. He said even if multiple cases are registered against him, he will not bow down, adding that he only bows before the Guru and the sangat.
Majithia alleged that the state government was indulging in political drama instead of addressing real issues. Referring to recent court proceedings, he claimed the government had created a political spectacle but achieved nothing substantial.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Majithia said the Chief Minister appears to spend most of his time attacking the Shiromani Akali Dal rather than focusing on governance. He said Mann is constantly chanting the name of the Akali Dal from morning till night, and as time passes, the situation has reached a point where even in his sleep he seems to be dreaming about the Akali Dal.
Criticising the government’s functioning, Majithia said the present regime has “sounded the death knell” of several sectors in Punjab. He alleged that the state’s economy has been ruined, law and order has collapsed, and employment opportunities have suffered badly. He further claimed that government employees and farmers have also been neglected. According to him, whenever farmers or employees raise their demands, they are threatened with action instead of being heard. Majithia said that those protesting are often labelled and targeted, adding that this reflects the mindset of the government.
He criticised Mann for allegedly devoting the majority of his public speeches to political opponents. According to Majithia, during a recent 45 minute address, nearly 43 minutes were spent targeting the Akali Dal while little was said about the government’s own achievements. He also questioned the government’s record as it approaches the completion of four years in power, claiming Punjab’s debt has crossed Rs 4 lakh crore and several promises remain unfulfilled.
Raising concerns about law and order, Majithia said incidents of violence and firing are becoming frequent in Punjab. He cited the recent killing of a sarpanch and alleged that the victim’s family has openly named a local MLA in connection with the case. He also questioned why an FIR had not yet been registered, asking whether different laws were being applied to those in power and to the opposition.
He further demanded an independent probe into the encounter of Ranjit Singh, stating that the victim’s family has accused the police and the government. According to Majithia, an independent postmortem and investigation are necessary to establish the truth. He said the probe could either exonerate the police or hold them accountable, but insisted that an impartial inquiry is essential.
Majithia also pointed to increasing use of sophisticated weapons in crimes and claimed that incidents involving AK 47 rifles and hand grenades are being reported. He alleged that reporting of such incidents is often limited even though firing incidents occur frequently.
Commenting on the functioning of the police, Majithia said that until a permanent Director General of Police is appointed, law and order would remain weak because temporary appointments lead to administrative uncertainty.
He said if the government plans to give Rs 1,000 to women, it should first account for the past four years. According to him, nearly 50 months have already passed and the government should explain why the promised benefits were not delivered earlier.
Majithia concluded by saying Punjab cannot be treated as a place where voters can be influenced through short term financial promises. He said Punjab is the land of the Gurus where dignity and respect for women hold great value, and the people of the state cannot be bought with monetary incentives.
